Бутан делает шаг к цифровому будущему с переносом ID-системы на Ethereum Translation: Bhutan Takes a Step Toward a Digital Future by Migrating ID System to Ethereum

The Kingdom of Bhutan will migrate its National Digital Identity (NDI) system from Polygon to Ethereum. Officials have cited the aim of enhancing data security as the reason for this change, according to BBS.

The migration process will begin with the integration of NDI into Ethereum, with a complete transition expected by the first quarter of 2026. The project was initially launched on the Polygon network in August 2024.

«By moving to Ethereum, we further bolster the security of our digital identification,» stated Jigme Tenzing, secretary of the GovTech agency.

NDI employs self-sovereign identity technology, allowing nearly 800,000 residents of the country to store and transfer their digital credentials for access to online services.

The launch ceremony was attended by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation president Aya Miyaguchi. She referred to Bhutan as the first nation to «establish its national digital identity system on Ethereum.»

Miyaguchi added that this initiative brings us closer to a «more open and secure digital future.»

According to BitcoinTreasuries, Bhutan ranks sixth globally in terms of Bitcoin reserves, holding a total of 6,371 BTC on its balance sheet.

It is worth noting that in July, the government of Bhutan transferred 512 BTC to Binance.
