The Kingdom of Bhutan has initiated the Bitcoin Development Pledge program, planning to allocate up to 10,000 BTC (approximately $1 billion) to bolster its national economy.

The main objective of this initiative is to support the construction of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), an economic hub located in the southern region of the kingdom, focused on sustainable development and innovation.

In the coming months, the government will finalize an asset management strategy. Various options are being considered for utilizing Bitcoin as collateral, implementing low-risk income-generating instruments, and establishing long-term storage solutions.

Preserving capital and its purchasing power for future generations remains a priority, as Bhutan bets on the continued appreciation of the first cryptocurrency.

In his address to the nation, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck likened the GMC to a company, with citizens as its shareholders:

«I am announcing the allocation of up to 10,000 BTC, valued at approximately $1 billion, to support this policy. It is a commitment to our people, our youth, and our nation.»

GMC will be designated as a special administrative region. Transparent regulations aim to attract international businesses in the fintech and digital assets sectors.

For several years, Bhutan has been mining cryptocurrencies using renewable hydropower. This approach allows for the monetization of excess energy generation without harming the environment.

The country ranks seventh worldwide in terms of reserves in digital gold, holding 5,984 BTC valued at over $517 million on its balance sheet.

Bhutan is also actively implementing blockchain technologies. The nation has launched a digital identification system for 800,000 citizens and introduced the TER token, backed by physical gold.

It is worth noting that GMC and the market maker Cumberland DRW have signed a memorandum of understanding. The partners will collaborate on developing the digital asset ecosystem and financial infrastructure of the kingdom.
