Record-Breaking Lightning Stretching from Texas to Kansas City Sets New World Standard

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially recognized a lightning bolt measuring 829 kilometers as the longest in history. This record-breaking strike occurred on October 22, 2017, over the United States, stretching from East Texas to the vicinity of Kansas City.

Initially, this enormous lightning event went unnoticed and was only identified during a subsequent analysis of satellite data. The new record surpasses the previous one, set in 2020 at 768 kilometers, by 61 kilometers.

To put this into perspective, the WMO compared the length of the lightning bolt to the distance between Venice and Paris, which is roughly equivalent to the distance from Moscow to Saratov, as reported by the organization. Scientists attribute this phenomenon to unique thunderstorm fronts—mesoscale convective systems typical of the Great Plains in North America.
