Referees Slip: A Good Goal Turned No Goal in NHL Drama

NHL referee Michael Markovic hesitated while announcing the decision after a video review during the third period of the game between the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers (3-1).

Florida forward Sam Reinhart scored a goal with 1:17 left in the third period, but contact between his teammate Anton Lundell and Devils goalie Jake Allen rendered the goal disallowed. The Panthers’ challenge was ultimately unsuccessful.

Markovic initially counted the goal but quickly reversed his call, declaring that the goal did not count and imposing a minor penalty on the Panthers.

“After the review, the on-ice decision stands. We have a good goal. Oh, excuse me, I apologize! After the review, there is no goal! Florida receives a minor penalty for delay of game,” the referee stated.
