Phil Spencer Commends Valve on New Device and Emphasizes the Value of Open Platforms

The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, commented on the announcement of new devices by Valve. He expressed that the industry benefits overall when gamers and developers have more options available.

While Phil Spencer was extending diplomatic congratulations, Xbox‘s senior social media manager, Josh Stein, couldn’t resist making a joke—he pointed out that the Valve device resembles those «leaked» images of the Xbox Series S from 2019.

However, the similarity is purely coincidental. Representatives from Valve emphasized that their design was inspired solely by their own experiences in PC gaming, rather than the ambitions of their competitors. “We typically base our approach on our own experiences in PC gaming—what we feel is missing and what our users have expressed,” they explained.

It’s worth noting that the new Valve devices are set to hit the market next year, though a specific release date has not yet been announced. The company will continue to self-distribute its technology, as it did with the Steam Deck. Upcoming innovations include a powerful mini-PC called the Steam Machine, a standalone VR headset named Steam Frame, and an improved version of the Steam Controller featuring touch controls.
