Мошенники используют киберполицию Австралии для обмана граждан через подделку данных Translation: Scammers exploit Australias cyber police to deceive citizens through data forgery

Criminals utilized a public channel to communicate with Australia’s cyber police in an attempt to extract digital assets from local residents. This was reported by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

According to law enforcement, the perpetrators illegally intercepted personal information, such as email addresses and phone numbers, via the database of the National Centre for Coordination of Police and Cybercrime Actions.

This information enabled them to send fraudulent requests on behalf of the victims through the national online crime reporting system, ReportCyber.

One victim received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller stated that the victim’s name appeared on a list of leaked cryptocurrency wallet data and provided an official incident reference code from ReportCyber.

The victim checked the information on the website, where indeed their email address was listed, compromised due to a data breach.

Later, the scammers called again, this time pretending to be from the exchange’s «customer support,» and asked the victim to transfer funds to a «secure wallet.» At that point, the victim became suspicious and ended the conversation.

In several other instances, similar tactics were employed, including «number spoofing.»

AFP Detective Superintendent Marie Anderson remarked that this new scam created an illusion of legitimacy:

«Cybercriminals conduct a verification procedure for the victim’s personal data that may align with common expectations. Furthermore, they quickly transition from messaging to phone calls, creating a sense of urgency.»

She noted that the incident highlights the increasingly sophisticated and calculated methods used by criminals to exploit the trust of Australians.

It is worth mentioning that in September, a user lost 783 BTC due to a social engineering attack. The attackers posed as representatives of a cryptocurrency exchange and the support team of a hardware wallet.
