Ex-Cop Receives Suspended Sentence for Selling Confidential Police Reports to Journalist Nephew

A court in Yekaterinburg has issued a four-year suspended sentence to a former police officer who confessed to selling confidential crime reports to his journalist nephew, according to a statement from the court’s press service on Tuesday.

Andrei Karpov was taken into custody in June on charges of bribery and misuse of power. Investigators reported that he shared police briefings containing personal data and pre-trial information with his nephew, Denis Allayarov, editor of Ura.ru, in exchange for money.

Karpov admitted his guilt and opted for a special trial, which permitted a resolution of the case without a comprehensive review of evidence.

The Verkh-Isetsky District Court declared him guilty on Tuesday, issuing a suspended four-year sentence and placing him on probation for the same duration.

Additionally, he has been prohibited from holding any law enforcement position for three years, stripped of his senior lieutenant rank, and ordered to return 120,000 rubles (approximately $1,500) that investigators stated he obtained unlawfully.

On Friday, Karpov testified against his nephew Allayarov in a separate bribery case, which is still pending in the same court, although no trial date has been scheduled yet.

Allayarov denies making any payments for police documents, asserting that he only transferred money to assist his grandmother with purchasing food and medication.

On the day when Allayarov and two colleagues were arrested in June, Ura.ru reported that police raids had disrupted their newsroom activities and resulted in the confiscation of servers, notebooks, and staff phones.
