Бутерин призывает к оптимизации Ethereum для достижения новых высот газа Translation: Buterin Calls for Ethereum Optimization to Reach New Gas Limits

The gas limit and costs for complex operations, such as those involving storage in the second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, could increase fivefold. This was stated by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

He responded to a post by Ethereum Foundation member Tony Varshatter, who mentioned a doubling of the network’s throughput to 60 million, which was achieved through the efforts of client teams and researchers.

The official increase of the gas limit from 30 million to 60 million was implemented on November 25, following approval from more than half of the validators.

Independent blockchain researcher Zhixun Pan emphasized that this change was made possible by three complementary improvements:

«In the future, Ethereum aims to push beyond the 60 million mark and eventually reach a target of 100 million. However, this requires further optimization of resource-intensive cryptographic operations (such as elliptic curve computations), controlling state bloat, and enhancing network propagation mechanisms,» the expert added.

Buterin noted that he expects the trend to continue into 2026, but the growth will be «more targeted and less uniform.» He estimates that changes may include:

With a fivefold increase in the current gas limit, it could reach 300 million. In April, Ethereum researcher Dunkrat Faist suggested raising it to 3.6 billion.

The Ethereum co-founder also donated 256 ETH (approximately $760,000) to two decentralized messaging apps—Session and SimpleX Chat. According to him, these applications are pushing the boundaries of digital privacy.

«However, both applications are still far from perfect—they require substantial work on usability and security. The main challenge lies in the nature of decentralization itself, which is essential for true metadata protection,» he noted.

Among the key challenges facing developers, Buterin pointed out:

He also highlighted that the next steps in decentralized messaging should include enabling account creation without permission and protecting metadata.

Privacy in messaging applications has become a pressing issue against the backdrop of controversial initiatives like the EU’s «Chat Control» bill. This legislation could force messaging services such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal to grant authorities access to users’ conversations.

Recall that Buterin criticized the idea, stating that it threatens citizens’ rights to privacy in digital communications.

Previously, he also opposed the geolocation feature in X, calling it «risky.»
