Medvedev Shares Insights on Managing Demands at the Trophies of Northern Palmyra Tournament

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, who triumphed over Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor at the «Trophies of the Northern Palmira» tournament, shared his thoughts on managing the physical demands of the event.

— How did you feel on the court, especially considering these sets last about 20 minutes without breaks? That’s quite unusual for regular tennis. Did you prepare specifically for this?
— I didn’t train specifically for it, but I arrived here a few days early, so I’m probably in better shape physically compared to Karen, Sasha, or Tallon. The reason is that they arrived later, and traveling can be quite exhausting. I felt good running around and was able to chase down all the balls. Honestly, I didn’t feel overly tired. It seemed that Tallon struggled more towards the end. But that’s just the nature of this physical format. A lot depends on the serve; if you manage to hit an ace, you don’t get fatigued. However, once the rally starts, it becomes more physically demanding. That’s what makes it interesting.

— Given this workload, will you have enough energy for the doubles match coming up right after, especially since Karen Khachanov will be playing without any break?
— We’ll see. I think it might even be easier for Karen because I’ll have to sign autographs now. So I’ll be sitting for a bit, then I’ll need about 10–15 minutes to warm up to avoid injury. But again, I’ve played many exhibition matches, and they all have their own quirks. It’s nothing to worry about, as I said. The key is to get warmed up a little and not get hurt. I’m sure the doubles match will be exciting, – Medvedev responded to questions from Championship correspondent Daniil Salnikov.
