Assassins Creed Shadows: Claws of Awaji DLC Receives Largely Negative Reviews from Players

Ubisoft has released the first major expansion for  Assassin’s Creed Shadows, titled  Claws of Awaji, but it has received largely negative feedback from players. At the time of this writing, only 34% of user reviews for “Claws of Awaji” on Steam are positive.

In the Claws of Awaji expansion, players join Naoe and Yasuke on a mysterious island called Awaji, where they embark on a quest to find a lost artifact while facing perilous enemies and traps. The protagonists gain new weapons, abilities, outfits, and traits that can be utilized in the main Shadows game. Additionally, the DLC introduces a new story chapter that reveals events involving a mysterious shinobi and the Sandzoku Ippa clan.

Reviews for Claws of Awaji have been predominantly critical. Many players express disappointment over the brief storyline, which can be completed in just 3 to 4 hours. Furthermore, there’s a perceived scarcity of content, especially for a price of $24.99 or 9,499 tenge. The narrative is deemed forgettable, the environment is almost identical to that of the main game, and the new character abilities are viewed as underwhelming. While some players find the new Bo weapon intriguing, it is considered insufficient to ensure an enjoyable experience on its own.

Some praise the fresh elements, such as chaotic enemy assaults in the streets and the ability to execute chain kills with the Bo, but this doesn’t make up for the overall lack of content. A few reviews note that the DLC runs smoothly without critical bugs, yet it adds little in terms of new mechanics, items, or engaging story moments. As a result, most players regard Claws of Awaji as a non-essential addition and recommend waiting for a sale.

At your own risk, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows – Claws of Awaji is available for purchase on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect), Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5. The expansion includes a textual Russian localization.
