England vs Wales: Alexander Yelagins Predictions for the Friendly Match at Wembley

Commentator Alexander Yelagin has shared his prediction for the match between England and Wales.

**Betting Option:** Both teams to score at 2.28.

«On October 9, a friendly match will take place at the national stadium Wembley in London, featuring the national teams of England and Wales. This will mark the 105th encounter between these British sides and only the eighth that is not part of an official tournament.

The last friendly duel between England and Wales occurred five years ago, also at Wembley, where the hosts won decisively with a score of 3-0. Interestingly, in the 21st century, these teams have met infrequently. For instance, they didn’t face each other at all from 1984 to 2000, whereas such matches used to be a staple of British football. Over the past 25 years, this will be just their eighth matchup, and the previous seven have ended with seven victories for the «Three Lions,» with an aggregate score of 14-2. In the last two encounters, England scored three goals each time and did not concede.

Currently, both teams are preparing for crucial matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifying rounds. Wales will host Belgium on October 13—both teams have accumulated 10 points, but the Belgians have played one match less and will face North Macedonia, who have 11 points, before traveling to Cardiff. The competition in Group J is intense, and the Welsh hope that their clash with England will serve as a valuable rehearsal before their significant encounter.

However, achieving a favorable outcome at Wembley will be very challenging. Wales has not won an away friendly match since 2008 (when current coach Craig Bellamy led them to victory over Denmark), and they have failed to score in their last ten such matches since 2009. Moreover, the Welsh have only managed one win in 24 away matches against England since World War II—in 1977. Since then, they have scored just twice on English soil, conceding 10 goals, and they have lost the last five meetings consecutively.

On the other hand, England is performing strongly in the qualifiers—collecting 15 points from 15 available, including a resounding 5-0 victory over Serbia, boasting a streak of seven consecutive wins in the qualification phase. Under coach Thomas Tuchel, the team has scored in 16 consecutive matches—that’s their best run in 30 years.

I expect Wales to put up a fight and possibly find the net at least once against Jordan Pickford or his substitute, as they have creativity and set-piece opportunities that Bellamy’s team relies on. However, England is undoubtedly likely to score as their attacking prowess is on another level,» Yelagin’s comments were reported by «Stavka TV.»
