EU Leaders Urge Inclusion in Trumps Controversial Ukraine Peace Proposal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized on Sunday that the «centrality» of the European Union’s position must be «fully incorporated» into any peace proposal for Ukraine.

Her remarks came amid U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s discussions in Switzerland regarding the contentious peace initiative.

«A credible and lasting peace agreement must primarily halt the violence and conclude the war, without planting the seeds for future conflict,» she stated.

«Ukraine should possess the autonomy and sovereign right to determine its own future. They have chosen a European path,» she added.

She specified that the plan should include rebuilding the country, facilitating its integration into the EU’s single market, and ultimately granting it full membership in the bloc.

During the G20 summit in Johannesburg, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed doubt over the likelihood of achieving an agreement.

«I am not yet convinced that the solutions proposed by President Trump will materialize in the coming days,» Merz remarked.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, also in South Africa, pointed out that there are «significant flaws» within the proposed plan.

«We require U.S. involvement to bring the war in Ukraine to an end and to address Russian aggression. That is a positive development,» Støre mentioned at the G20 summit.

«However, the plan is inadequate and contains considerable shortcomings that must be addressed. One critical aspect is ensuring that Europe is included in discussions and, importantly, that Ukraine has a seat at the table,» he stated.

«Altering borders through force is unacceptable,» Støre asserted, in reference to the 28-point proposal.

Støre underscored that the plan must comply with international law, including the principles set forth in the United Nations Charter.

Europe is keen on ensuring it remains an active participant in the discussions surrounding the peace plan suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

The EU will be engaging in talks in Geneva on Sunday with officials from Ukraine and the U.S., with EU representation from von der Leyen’s deputy, Bjoern Seibert.

European leaders gathering for a separate summit in Luanda, Angola, on Monday are also scheduled to discuss the strategy for Ukraine.
