Headline: Уязвимость Truebit привела к краху токена после хакерской атаки на $26 млн Translation: Vulnerability in Truebit Leads to Token Crash Following $26 Million Hacker Attack

On January 8, the Ethereum verification protocol Truebit experienced a breach in which hackers stole 8,535 ETH (approximately $26.4 million). This information was reported by analysts at Lookonchain.

The project team confirmed the hack, stating that only one smart contract was affected. The developers have not yet disclosed the reasons behind the incident or the full extent of the damage, as the investigation is ongoing.

«We are in contact with law enforcement and are taking every available measure to resolve the situation,» Truebit noted.

Independent researcher Weilin (William) Li suggested that the attackers exploited a vulnerability in a token issuance function with an incorrectly set price in an outdated contract that was deployed around five years ago.

The attackers managed to purchase native TRU coins at an artificially low rate.

The expert believes that two separate groups participated in the hack: the first group made profits of about $26 million, while the second group earned around $250,000.

The TRU token plummeted in value, with its price dropping nearly 100% in just 24 hours. At the time of writing, the coin is trading at about $0.00007212.

Recall that at the end of December, the Trust Wallet browser extension was hacked for $8.5 million. The project team reported that the breach impacted 2,520 addresses.

Almost simultaneously, the DeFi protocol Unleash Protocol also fell victim to cybercriminals, with approximately $3.9 million stolen.

By the end of 2025, the total losses from hacks amounted to $3.4 billion, the majority of which was attributed to hackers from North Korea.
