Kremlin Awaiting Clarity on U.S. Peace Proposal Following Geneva Discussions

On Monday, the Kremlin announced that it has not received any new information from the White House regarding its recent peace proposal following discussions between Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Geneva. The Kremlin stated it would wait to see how the conversations develop before formulating a response.

“We have not received any information as of now,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed journalists. “We have been closely monitoring the numerous media reports over the past few days, including those from Geneva, but nothing has come to us officially.”

Following their meeting in Switzerland on Sunday, representatives from the United States and Ukraine released a joint statement indicating that they had “drafted an updated and refined peace framework” based on a 28-point plan that had been leaked last week and was subsequently verified by the White House.

The statement mentioned that Ukrainian and U.S. officials plan to continue their “intensive work” on joint proposals in the days ahead. Many Ukrainians initially regarded the original plan as a form of capitulation, as it conceded to several of the Kremlin’s persistent demands.

Peskov remarked on Monday, “We saw a report stating that some amendments were made to the document after the discussions in Geneva. We will wait. It appears that dialogue is ongoing.”

European leaders, caught off guard by Washington’s recent peace initiative, quickly developed their own 28-point counterproposal, which was unveiled on Sunday. EU officials are expected to deliberate this proposal during emergency discussions regarding Ukraine at a summit in Angola later on Monday.

Peskov indicated that no meetings are scheduled this week between Russian and American officials, but he emphasized that President Vladimir Putin remains open to dialogue with Washington.

He refrained from commenting on the specifics of either the U.S. or European proposals, citing the intricate nature of the ongoing negotiations.

“This matter is too significant and complex to base our actions solely on media reports. It is essential to depend on information sourced through official channels,” Peskov stated.

On Friday, Putin expressed that U.S. proposals for peace in Ukraine might serve as a foundation for a future agreement to conclude the ongoing conflict, now approaching its four-year mark. He also cautioned that the Russian military would take additional Ukrainian territory if Kyiv were to reject the plan.
