OpenAI has introduced group chats in ChatGPT for users around the world, enabling them to interact with each other within the chatbot.

Collaborative conversations have been available in a beta version for a week in select regions, with plans to roll out the feature to all registered users in the coming days.

The company states that this tool transforms ChatGPT from a solitary assistant into a collaborative space where friends, family members, or colleagues can work together, plan, create, and make decisions.

OpenAI envisions group chats as a means to coordinate trips, collaboratively write documents, resolve disputes, or conduct research. ChatGPT aids in searching for, summarizing, and comparing options.

Up to 20 participants can join a group chat. Personal settings and memory remain confidential for each user, with future plans for more flexible configuration options.

To initiate a group chat, users need to click on the «People» icon to add participants or send a direct link. Users will be prompted to fill out a brief profile with their name and photo.

Adding a new participant to an existing chat creates a new conversation thread while leaving the old one unchanged.

Group chats can be found in a new section on the sidebar of the app.

OpenAI has stated that ChatGPT now autonomously determines when to engage in a conversation. The assistant can also respond with emojis and reference profile photos. This feature is based on the GPT-5.1 Auto model.

Users can mention ChatGPT in their messages to receive responses from the AI.

In chats, users can search for information, send images and files, generate pictures, and dictate text. There are response rate limits applied to the chatbot’s answers, which depend on the user’s subscription plan.

Users have the ability to customize group settings, such as renaming the group, adding or removing participants, and disabling notifications.

The company emphasized that the launch of group chats marks a significant step towards transforming its product into a collaborative platform.

«As ChatGPT continues to evolve as a better partner in group conversations, it will help you brainstorm, make decisions, and express your creativity alongside the people who matter most to you,» reads a blog post from OpenAI.

It’s worth noting that in November, OpenAI updated its flagship AI model GPT-5, introducing two variations: GPT‑5.1 Instant and GPT‑5.1 Thinking.
