Progressing Steadily: Todd Howard Shares Insights on The Elder Scrolls VI Development

The head of Bethesda Game Studios, Todd Howard, along with his team, has shared insights into the ongoing development of the The Elder Scrolls VI, a project that the studio has barely mentioned since its announcement at E3 2018. According to him, the project is making steady progress, although both the team and the fans wish the results would come faster.

In an interview with Game Informer, Howard emphasized that the majority of the studio is currently focused on the sixth installment of the franchise.

Over seven years have passed since the announcement, so just think about that.

Studio director Angela Browder wryly acknowledged that the wait has been extended, but she emphasized that technology has advanced significantly since the release of the last main title.

Emil Pagliarulo, the design director, added that while development is moving forward, it may not always be evident from the outside. He mentioned that gamers often push studios for quicker releases, but developers themselves do not feel such pressure—this can be frustrating for those who have been eagerly awaiting the launch. However, large games naturally require a significant amount of time for both development and refinement, as issues are fixed and details polished.

Pagliarulo cited the postponements of GTA VI as the right course of action. The developer pointed out that the choice is straightforward: release an unfinished project early or take the time to produce a truly high-quality title. Thus, the team is committed to working as long as necessary to ensure that the final product meets expectations.

It’s worth noting that Bethesda is not solely focused on the monumental TES VI—they are simultaneously advancing other projects as well. Recently, Howard mentioned that hundreds of people are working on projects within the Fallout universe, including Fallout 76. He confessed that he feels fortunate to be involved in multiple major initiatives—ranging from games to the Fallout series for Amazon—and he approaches each with equal enthusiasm.
