Rising RAM Prices Force Larian to Optimize Divinity Ahead of Schedule

The sharp increase in prices for RAM and SSDs has reached unprecedented heights. This issue is extending beyond hardware markets and beginning to impact game development. Larian Studios has encountered this issue. According to the studio’s head, Swen Vincke, the shortage of components is prompting the team to focus on optimizing their new game, Divinity, significantly earlier than originally planned.

In an interview with TheGamer, Vincke remarked that the industry has never experienced prices like these. He stated that the rising cost of memory disrupts standard calculations and renders previous forecasts obsolete. Typically, developers can anticipate how hardware requirements will evolve, but the current situation has stripped them of that certainty.

As a result, Larian is now compelled to invest in technical optimization during the early access phase. The studio had initially intended to focus on this aspect later, once the core systems of Divinity were in place. However, the team now finds itself needing to adapt to market realities, where hardware demands are escalating faster than expected.
