Sonys Revenue from Steam Games Surpasses $1.2 Billion as PC Strategy Gains Momentum

Sony is actively solidifying its position in the PC gaming market. According to estimates from Alinea, games released under the PlayStation Studios brand on Steam have already generated over $1.5 billion in gross revenue. After accounting for Valve’s commission, nearly $1.2 billion has gone into the pockets of the Japanese company, while the platform itself has earned around $350 million.

In total, Sony has sold 43 million copies of its titles on Steam, with the standout performer being Helldivers 2. This cooperative shooter has been a tremendous success, amassing $400 million in sales and selling 12.7 million copies. Approximately 200,000 players launch the game daily, and one in five has spent over 100 hours playing it. Interestingly, «Helldivers 2» has sold twice as well on Steam as it did on PS5, marking a significant hit for Sony on PC and demonstrating the demand for engaging and affordable cooperative games among Steam users.

Older titles are also showing impressive numbers:

As you may have noticed, many of the successful projects were released on PC quite some time ago. Experts indicate that the novelty effect is slowly wearing off. The first major ports were seen as events, but now the audience has adapted, which is reflected in the sales dynamics.

For instance, Horizon: Forbidden West is selling at a third of the pace compared to Zero Dawn within the same timeframe. This trend is also observed with other sequels, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök. Both games have exhibited a noticeably weaker launch compared to their predecessors.

However, this does not imply that Sony is struggling on PC or not making sales—Ragnarök still generated $45 million, and Spider-Man 2 brought in $32 million, though players are becoming more selective.

PlayStation is gradually bridging the gap between console releases and those on Steam. The company now considers a window of 6 to 12 months optimal, allowing Sony to maintain peak demand for PS5 while simultaneously capturing market share on PC. Service projects are most often launched simultaneously on both platforms.

Nonetheless, this approach might alter, according to analysts at Alinea. The emergence of Steam Machine looms ahead—if Valve develops its own hardware with native support for major titles, the platform would transform from just a storefront to a direct competitor. In such a case, it’s likely that the release timelines for PlayStation games on PC would need to be reconsidered.

In conclusion, the analyst from Alinea shared another figure that users requested: Bloodborne has sold over 9 million copies on PlayStation. Additionally, in the six months following its release, Elden Ring gained another 400,000 in sales.

It’s worth mentioning that enthusiasts of Sony games on PC may help the company inch closer to $2 billion in revenue on Steam, especially with the ongoing PlayStation project sale on the Valve platform that runs until December 2nd. Almost all titles mentioned in this article are available at a significant discount.
