Suno Expands AI Music Editing Capabilities with WavTool Acquisition Amid Legal Challenges

Suno, an AI-driven music company currently engaged in legal disputes with music labels, announced on Thursday its acquisition of WavTool, a browser-based AI digital audio workstation (DAW). This acquisition aims to enhance Suno’s editing capabilities for songwriters and producers.

Launched in 2023, WavTool provides musicians with a variety of features, including layer separation, AI-driven sound generation, and an AI music assistant. Suno plans to incorporate WavTool’s technology into its new editing interface, which debuted this month.

**Details of the deal remain undisclosed.** A company representative stated that the «majority» of WavTool’s staff has transitioned to Suno’s product and engineering teams, although the exact number of those who did not make the transition has not been revealed.

This acquisition comes on the heels of another lawsuit against Suno. Country musician Tony Justice and his label, 5th Wheel Records, filed a suit earlier this month, claiming that Suno used copyrighted sound recordings to train its AI music generator.

This allegation mirrors the lawsuits filed last year by Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment against Suno for copyright infringement. According to Bloomberg, major record labels are in **licensing discussions** with Suno.

Suno acquired WavTool a few months ago, and the browser-based DAW ceased operations in November. The announcement made this week appears to be strategic, possibly aimed at diverting attention from the legal issues. Legal challenges can undermine investor confidence, so this acquisition announcement may serve to reassure them that the company remains committed to growth.

In May of this year, the AI startup secured funding of **$125 million**.
