x402 обновляет платежный протокол: новый уровень трансформации интернет-транзакций x402 Updates Payment Protocol: A New Level of Transformation for Internet Transactions

Half a year after its launch, the Coinbase-backed project x402 has unveiled the second version of its protocol, aimed at transforming the system of simple one-step transactions into a «unified payment layer for the internet.»

«x402 debuted in May 2025 with a straightforward concept: to embed payments directly into HTTP using the long-dormant status code 402,» wrote Coinbase Developer Platform developers Eric Reppel, Carson Roscoe, and Josh Nickerson.

They elaborated that V2 builds upon the data gathered from six months of real-world payment processing. During this time, the system handled over 100 million transactions via different APIs, applications, and through AI agents.

The new iteration features a series of technical enhancements: streamlined creation of customizable scenarios, expanded identification and wallet capabilities, and support for traditional payment systems.

«The second version of the x402 protocol represents the next step toward making value transfer on the internet as effortless as information exchange,» project representatives stated.

They clarified that the payment solution becomes «multi-chain by default,» capable of operating with native tokens from Base, Solana, and other blockchains without the need for custom logic. The system is also compatible with TradFi infrastructure, such as ACH and payment cards.

The updated protocol introduces dynamic payTo routing, which supports usage-based billing, subscriptions, prepayment, and multi-stage transactions. Developers will have the ability to add «lifecycle hooks» for monitoring metrics and conditional tools, as well as to create customized paywalls.

«With expanded compatibility, simplified development, and the integration of new payment and identification models, V2 transforms x402 into a more flexible layer for payments driven by people, applications, and agents,» the blog notes.

In September, Cloudflare and Coinbase established the x402 Foundation to promote the protocol. In October, the Payments MCP tool was introduced, enabling large language models like Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini to interact with blockchain wallets.

It is worth noting that an expert using the alias shisi.eth criticized x402, forecasting a lull in the corresponding segment.
